Extension of Renewable Energies in Selected States of Eastern Europe

  • Project no.1145
  • Duration 12/2007 - 02/2009

At the meeting in March 2007, the European Council decides to commit the EU-Member States to increase their energy efficiency. Among other things, this aim should be achieved by a 20 % share of renewable energies in overall EU energy consumption by 2020, taking into consideration individual circumstances, starting points and potentials. Furthermore, the council endorsed a 10 % minimum share of biofuels in overall EU transport petrol and diesel consumption by 2020. This target should be introduced in a cost-efficient way.
Against this background, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) placed an order with the Wuppertal Institute to conduct the realisation of these targets from a scientific perception in the Member States of Eastern Europe. The Wuppertal Institute will assist the bilateral and multilateral discussions of the Ministry with East European governmental delegations. This conversation will identify the individual starting points of the East European Member States and enables to deduce the country-specific expert advice.
The final report will bundle all details and results, and will give guidelines and recommendations for further (country-specific) activities and bilateral cooperation regarding the national implementation of the EU aims in the analysed countries of Eastern Europe. Further research and development demand will be specified.
