Press release of the Project bigEE - bridging the information gap on Energy Efficiency in buildings

Wuppertal/Doha. Policy-makers and decision-makers in the private sector, as well as actors involved in construction and refurbishment or implementation of policies and energy services worldwide now have access to a single source for information on energy efficiency in buildings to facilitate their daily work:

bigee.net offers a comprehensive and user-friendly overview of worldwide existing know-how on energy-efficient design and technological solutions as well as policy options, amended with good practice examples to demonstrate their practicability.

During the launch of bigee.net on 4th of December in Doha, Qatar, the President of the German Federal Environment Agency, Jochen Flasbarth, stated that "Upscaling energy efficiency is the cheapest, fastest and cleanest energy resource for climate protection in the short and medium term".

This applies particularly to the building sector in fast-growing economies characterised by a large increase of the building stock. For this reason, the project bigEE - bridging the information gap on Energy Efficiency in buildings, which is co-ordinated by the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy (Germany) involves project partners in these countries. Currently, co-operation with partner organisations in China and South Africa is on-going, while India and Mexico are intended to follow in the near future. In addition to the generally applicable information available on the platform, bigee.net will provide tailored information for these countries such as energy saving potentials differentiated by sector and end-use, net economic benefits and implemented policy instruments. The project receives funding from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.

The launch of bigee.net during the UN climate negotiations at COP18 in Doha was attended by numerous international guests and is an important milestone in the project, since bigee.net now provides easily accessible and transparent decision-making support. The platform will be continuously developed and more content will follow in due course. Stay informed by the bigEE-newsletter.
