Factsheet Measuring Resource Extraction

Needs to Consider Both Used and Unused Extraction

  • Downloads 02.04.2013

Man extracts not only raw materials from nature. To get them, in particular open pit mining moves huge amounts of soil and earth, changing landscapes with deep impact. Also for road and building construction, for railway dams, dikes and to keep waterways clear, enormous amounts of soil and sediment are extracted. The various environmental impacts depend on the yearly turnover of the overall volume of natural or primary material extraction. Therefore, also the so-called "unused extraction" needs to be considered. It is accounted for in indicators such as TMR.
