Delivering on the New Urban Agenda

New Partnership with UN-Habitat

  • News 21.03.2017

Urbanisation is increasing rapidly, particularly in developing and emerging economies, which creates great opportunities, but also poses significant challenges. Cities currently account for about 70 percent of energy consumption and about 80 percent of energy related greenhouse gas emissions, while only covering 2 percent of the earth's land. Providing a framework to address these challenges and utilise the opportunities of sustainable urban development was the main objective of the New Urban Agenda, which was adopted at the Habitat III conference in Quito, Ecuador in October 2016. In an effort to deliver on the New Urban Agenda the Mobility and International Cooperation Research Unit at the Wuppertal Institute has teamed-up with UN-Habitat and international partners from the urban mobility SOLUTIONS network to develop an implementation programme for urban access and mobility in cities in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
