Events with participation of the Wuppertal Institute

  • Events 08.05. - 19.05.2017

From 8 to 19 May, the next round of international climate negotiations will take place in Bonn, Germany. This conference serves as preparation for the conference of the parties (COP23) in November. Around 2800 delegates are expected to participate in the Bonn Climate Change Conference at the World Conference Center Bonn. The Wuppertal Institute is co-organising and contributing to a number of events in the framework of the negotiations.

The following list will be constantly updated:

  • Date: 11 May 2017, 16.45-18.15, Room: Bonn (181)
UNFCCC Side Event: Ensuring integrity of Paris Agreement Art. 6 - challenges and opportunities from a civil society perspective
This official UNFCCC side-event is co-organised by Nature Code - Centre of Development & Environment (NC) and the German NGO Forum on Environment and Development. Experts will reflect on crucial elements to ensure robust governance and social environmental integrity of the new mechanisms. Speakers include Wolfgang Obergassel from the Wuppertal Institute.

  • Date: 12 May 2017, 16.45-18.15, Room: Berlin (112)
UNFCCC Side Event: Paris Agreement and the SDGs: ToR for Governing a Global Transformation to Sustainability?
This official UNFCCC side-event is co-organised by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and the Wuppertal Institute. The Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals provide direction for a just transition of the global energy sector. Exploring complementarities may help to escape the paradigm of burden sharing towards a paradigm in which sustainable technologies and practices become inherently attractive as means to realise multiple benefits. Speakers include Lukas Hermwille and Wolfgang Obergassel from the Wuppertal Institute.

  • Date: 15. Mai, 16.45-18.15, room: Berlin (112)
UNFCCC Side Event: Long-term Strategies for climate resilient development
National adaptation plans may seldom go beyond existing government planning horizons. A longer term national vision on adaptation may however be needed for strengthening strategic adaptive capacities such as institutional and regulatory frameworks over time. This Side Event is organised by Oliver Lah from the Wuppertal Institute.

  • Date: 10 May 2017, 10.00-13.00, Venue: Bundeskunsthalle (Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland – The Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany), Friedrich-Ebert-Allee 4, Bonn
Off-Side Event: Options to Use Art. 6 of the Paris Agreement for the Global Energy Transition
The decarbonisation of energy supply is a key element of the transformation required to achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement. Article 6 of the Paris Agreement represents a promising tool to create effective incentives for the expansion of renewable energy use worldwide. Wuppertal Institute and GFA Consulting Group are organising this workshop on behalf of the German Federal Environment Agency to explore options on how to design approaches under Article 6 to support this transformation. Speakers include Lukas Hermwille and Wolfgang Obergassel from the Wuppertal Institute.

  • Date: 17 May 2017, 13.00-17.00, Venue: Federal Press Office (Bundespresseamt), Welckerstrasse 11, 53113 Bonn
Off-Side Event: Prospects of linking emissions trading schemes: From theory to practice
Linking regional, national, and subnational emissions trading schemes (ETS) offers the opportunity to build a global carbon market from the bottom-up while potentially reducing emissions at lower cost and reducing competitive distortions. Adelphi and the Wuppertal Institute are organising this workshop on behalf of the German Federal Environment Agency to discuss options to evaluate the costs and benefits of such links. Speakers include Christiane Beuermann from the Wuppertal Institute.

  • Date: 12-13 May 2017, Venue: German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), Tulpenfeld 6, 53113 Bonn
    Contributions to the "Interconnections" Conference
The "Interconnections" conference seeks to explore linkages between the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Climate Agreement. Among the papers to be presented are the following contributions by Wuppertal Institute's scientists: "SDGs and Paris Agreement: Terms of Reference for the Global Energy Transformation?" by Lukas Hermwille and "Options for Leveraging the SDGs for Increasing Ambition under the UNFCCC" by Wolfgang Obergassel, Florian Mersmann and Hanna Wang-Helmreich as well as "Options to promote sustainable development through climate mitigation actions under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement" by Christof Arens and Karen Holm Olsen (UNEP DTU).

  • Some Side Events will be live broadcasted via UNFCCC Climate Change Studio's YouTube channel. Further information can be found on the website of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the website of the Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik.
