The 8th Sustainable Summer School taking place at Nikolaus Monastery in Jüchen, Germany from Septemver 3 to 10, 2017.

The introduction of smartphones is one of the most striking cultural innovations since the invention of printing. Within one decade, smartphones have radically effected on our everyday lives. These revolutionary innovation is just about to accelerate the changes in our lives, our cultural and economic patterns, and even of our bodies in an unprecedented manner.

On the other hand, smartphone production and use has enormous impacts on material flows around the globe. The impacts are not limited to the resources of the planet only, but affect as well all the people who are ensnared into the extraction of resources, their well-being, their political and ecological situation, and their human right situation. The summer school will immerse into these challenging contexts in a one-week intensive workshop with a strong trans-disciplinary approach

The partners of the Sustainable Summer School are cooperating since 2008, in order to provide insights in research, standards, practices and perspectives of Sustainable Design to all affiliated disciplines. The event is organized by the Wuppertal Institute, the Folkwang University of the Arts, the Bergische Universität Wuppertal, ecosign – Academy for Sustainable Design as well as missio – Pontificial Mission Society.
