A Fair Transition Away From Coal

Conference und and presentation of the study "Phasing-Out Coal, Reinventing European Regions" at the European Parliament in Brussel

  • Events 11.04.2018

The Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament is determined to engage in a meaningful dialogue with all actors so we can find the best possible path out of coal, while supporting European regions and miners effectively. The objective of the conference is to bring together representatives from different coal regions to discuss about a fair transition away from coal, to create synergies and a networking platform for future exchanges, and to identify possible concrete areas of work convergence. Two panels with interactive discussions, with short interventions will be followed by a debate and questions and answers with participants.

During the event Timon Wehnert, Vice Head Berlin Office and Project Co-ordinator in the Division Energy, Transport and Climate Policy at the Wuppertal Institute, will present the study "Phasing-Out Coal, Reinventing European Regions". The study was carried out by the Wuppertal Institute on behalf of "The Greens - European Free Alliance". The core of the study is an analysis of how four European coal regions in Germany, Poland, Greece and Spain use the EU structural funds, and which starting points would exist for using these subsidies more specifically for the necessary transformation – away from coal.

Other speakers include representatives from the European coal regions and Members of the European Parliament, such as Reinhard Bütikofer and Rebecca Harms. Simultaneous translation into several EU languages will be provided.
