Sustainable Transformation of the Transport Sector

Challenges and strategies for sustainable mobility

  • News 13.02.2019

In terms of CO2 emissions, transport is the fastest growing sector in emerging countries and the sector with the least progress in reducing emissions in developed countries. Progress in tackling climate change in the transport sector is far behind that of other sectors.
The transport sector must follow a low-carbon development path to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and stabilise global warming at 2 degrees Celsius. The transport sector will need to develop its own transport infrastructure to meet the challenges of climate change. It faces a number of major sustainability challenges, notably in the areas of air quality, energy security, and resource efficiency.

The book "Sustainable Urban Mobility Pathways", edited by Oliver Lah, Head of the Research Unit Mobility and International Cooperation in the Division of Energy, Transport and Climate Policy at the Wuppertal Institute, identifies the most important trends and drivers for a transformation of the sector. He examines how sustainable solutions in urban mobility can contribute to achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Building on the experience of cooperation between cities in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, the book examines the main challenges posed by the Paris Climate Agreement, the SDGs and the New Urban Agenda. Key policies and strategies to implement sustainable mobility are identified, with contributions from Lew Fulton, Magdala Arioli, Saul Alveano, Venn Chesterton, Lefteris Sdoukopoulos and others partners who participated in the EU-funded SOLUTIONS and FUTURE-RADAR projects.
