Participation facilitates a better understanding of societal challenges, gives access to data and information gathered on location, and promotes mutual learning with the assimilation of different perspectives, the use of adapted technology and better implementation of innovative options.

The paper "Responsible Research and Innovation for Jobs & Growth" of the Federation of German Scientists presents different projects, that have involved societal actors in creating multiple social, economic and ecological benefits. Prof. Philipp Schepelmann, Project Co-ordinator in the Urban Transitions Research Unit in the Energy, Transport and Climate Policy Division at the Wuppertal Institute, presents the "Innovation City Bottrop".
