Tactical Urbanism: What, Why and How?

Webinar series (Part 2): Adopting Tactical Urbanism in your cities

  • Events 04.03.2020
  • Location Online

Cities like Copenhagen, Amsterdam and New York were not always as attractive as they are today. They have undergone constant change. New York is the most recent example of the countries mentioned above: New York changed from traffic-jammed streets with yellow taxis to streets inviting to sit and play outside.

For the transformation of public spaces the communication between city administrations and users is crucial. However, this is often neglected, leading to unused or dead public spaces in cities
Tactical urbanism offers itself as a tool to revitalise such spaces and to transform them into people-friendly spaces at minimal cost and in a limited time – through a community-driven approach, while at the same time creating an awareness of the need for space.

The second part of the webinar series focuses will dive into the details on how to implement tactical urbanism backed with relevant case studies and much more content that we will add based on your inputs. The topics and presenters are:

  • Your Tactical Urbanism Toolkit
Rajeev Malagi, Senior Associate, Sustainable Cities, World Resources Institute India
    Success Stories
  • The Key elements of the successful implementation of Zones 30 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil
Maria Yetano Roche, Research Fellow, Research Unit International Energy Transitions, Division Future Energy and Industry Systems, Wuppertal Institute
  • Transformation of Luthuli Avenue in Nairobi, Kenya
Eng. Kuiyaki, Nairobi County, Kenya (tbc)

This webinar series is funded by the Wuppertal Institute as part of the "environMENTALISE" initiative of the Urban Pathways Project by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the Federal Ministry for the Environment. The one-hour webinar is organised jointly with the World Resources Institute India and will take place on 4 March 2020 at 09:30 a.m. (Central European Time).
