Opportunities for Organic Waste

Webinar series on solutions and case studies from the Global South (in French)

Urban areas are responsible for 2.1 billion tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) generated worldwide each year. In most cities of the Global South, organic waste is the main component of municipal waste, comprising up to 70 per cent. Most of it is deposited in landfills, where it produces methane and other gases, bad odors and leachate. This contaminates the surrounding environment and quality of life of the residents living around it. Financially, waste management costs take in a large amount of the local governments’ budget.
However, cities can change this and make use of their organic waste. They can establish organic waste treatment plans, produce compost, renewable fuel or other products. Especially on a local level organic waste treatment is rewarding. It reduces emissions and environmental pollution, creates jobs and local agriculture, as well as reduces the costs of waste disposal.

The Webinar is organised by the Wuppertal Institute together with UN-Habitat (Waste Wise Cities Campaign) under the Urban Pathways project, funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) from the German Ministry of Environment. It will examine different solutions for organic waste treatment – from large-scale municipal composting plants to decentralised systems at neighbourhood level. The aim is to discuss and share good examples and knowledge on different options among representatives from Latin American, African and Asian municipalities, research institutions, NGOs, and other stakeholders.

The webinar will take one and a half hour and is conducted in four different languages (English, Portuguese, Spanish and French) on different dates to reach a broad number of officers and professionals of the cities in the respective regions. It will start with an overview of the different solutions, followed by the case studies of different cities in the regions.

On 6 May, 2020 at 3 pm (CEST) the webinar will be hosted in French with examples in Africa. The webinar is free of charge and the registration is possible in the link below.
