Coal Regions in Transition Virtual Week

The "Coal Regions in Transition Platform", supported by the Wuppertal Institute, will host a series of online events from 29 June to 3 July 2020 under the title "Launch of the Just Transition Platform - Coal Regions in Transition virtual week and Carbon Intensive Regions seminar". The series of events comprises six sessions and deals with different thematic perspectives regarding the future development of CO2-intensive industries, the European gas and coal regions and the implementation of a just transition.

In this context, Maria Yetano Roche, Research Fellow in the Future Energy and Industry System Division at the Wuppertal Institute, will present the activities of the Secretariat of the Platform for Coal Regions in Transition. The presentation will be held on Friday, 3 July from 10:35 until 10:55. Furthermore, Timon Wehnert, Head of the Berlin Office of the Wuppertal Institute, will be part of a roundtable, which will take place on the same date between 10:55 and 11:40 am, with the topic of "Regional Transitions in a Time of Uncertainty: Perspectives and Insights".

To kick off the virtual week, the Commission will also present the new Just Transition Platform, which supports the regions in implementing a fair and inclusive transformation and is intended to act as a complementary building block to the financing tool "Just Transition Mechanism". In addition, a stakeholder seminar will discuss the challenges and opportunities of implementing a just transition, especially in emission-intensive regions and industries, and how the Commission can support the transition process in these regions.
