I4C Online Seminar: How to Raise Ambition Through Carbon Offsetting?

To stay within the temperature limits established by the Paris Agreement, Parties must urgently raise their mitigation ambition. In this context, offset approaches that enable the international transfer and use of mitigation outcomes against national mitigation targets could play a key role. Against this background, the Innovate4Climate (I4C) online seminar entitled "How to raise ambition through carbon offsetting? Lessons learned and post-2020 prospects" will showcase how offsets have impacted climate policies in the past and explore how to make offsets an effective and efficient climate policy tool post-2020.

Recent research results will be presented, which also consider the "San Jose Principles for High Ambition and Integrity in International Carbon Markets". The research results are part of the Federal Environment Agency-funded project "Analysis of Advantages and Disadvantages of Offset Approaches in Selected Sectors" executed by Wuppertal Institute and South Pole. Together with other members of the project team, Nicolas Kreibich, Researcher in the International Climate Policy Research Unit in the Division of Energy, Transport and Climate Policy at the Wuppertal Institute, will present key research findings and discuss their implications for the future design of climate policies. The panel, which will include policymakers and stakeholders from developing and developed countries, discusses the potential benefits of offsets as well as their risks within the framework of domestic and international offsetting schemes, particularly in consideration of the dynamic nature of the Paris Agreement and its long-term mitigation goals.
