The eREC – Digital Recycling Expo and Conference for Circular Economy and Waste Management is the digital trade fair for the recycling industry and will take place from 4 to 9 October 2021. It offers a virtual platform that guarantees national and international exchange between companies, customers and associations. The Wuppertal Institute is this year's cooperation partner of the event. All participants of the virtual event have the opportunity – in the form of digital exhibition stands – to optimally present products, innovations and themselves. Visitors can visit the exhibition stands, get in touch with the exhibitors via chat and benefit from the event's broad supporting programme.
In order to obtain more in-depth information on trends, specialist topics and innovations from the recycling, waste management and environmental service branch, eRec will be offering a series of webinars as well as a large selection of lectures during the fair. On the second day of the trade event, 5 October, Dr. Henning Wilts, Director of the Circular Economy Division at the Wuppertal Institute, will be devoting his lecture (in German) "Mit Precycling zu mehr Ressourceneffizienz: Systemische Lösungen der Verpackungsvermeidung" (PuR) to the topic of packaging waste. No country in Europe produces more packaging waste than Germany. For plastic packaging alone, the amount has almost doubled compared to 1995. The cooperation project of the TU Berlin and the Wuppertal Institute wants to change this now. Dr. Henning Wilts introduces the doctoral group PuR, which investigates why so much packaging waste is produced and designs suitable strategies to avoid it. The PuR junior research group takes a close look at the entire value chain – from the product idea to production and disposal – in order to identify starting points for packaging avoidance (precycling). In contrast to recycling, precycling means that no packaging waste is produced in the first place. This is intended to conserve resources and reduce the burden on the environment.
