Coal regions across the world face very special challenges in the transition to a climate neutral economy. A view to historic structural change processes in regions where coal mining has declined or stopped, show that these transition processes take decades. Early action and a well-managed transition can significantly lessen negative impacts for the region and help to reap many of the potential benefits of a coal phase-out. However, there are many challenges. Regional decision makers do need to acquire demanding skills in good governance and often struggle with a lack of both capacities and information.
Against this background, within the past years, the Wuppertal Institute compiled a set of toolkits to support European coal regions. This existing pool of knowledge has now been extended into a Toolbox for Just Energy Transitions in Coal Regions globally. In a series of online events, selected key issues with high relevance for coal regions outside the EU are now being discussed.
