There are many ideas for sustainable urban development. The crucial thing is to follow up the ideas with action. From 10 to 26 June 2022, the Solar Decathlon Europe 21/22 (SDE 21/22) will take place in Wuppertal. For its 20th anniversary, the most important university architecture competition in the world is coming to Germany for the first time. Due to the Corona pandemic, the main event of the SDE 21/22 was postponed from September last year to June 2022. The aim of the international student competition is to advance the energy transition in urban neighbourhoods against the backdrop of climate change. The focus is on sustainable building and living in the city. The student teams from eleven countries construct 18 buildings on the Solar Campus and compete internationally. In addition to ten competition disciplines, such as energy performance, building technology & building physics and sustainability, the teams will be judged in other categories and awarded special prizes.

The Wuppertal Institute is a cooperation partner of the SDE 21/22. Dr. Franziska Stelzer, Senior Researcher in the Innovation Labs Research Unit at the Wuppertal Institute, supports the "SDE 21/22" project team in the field of urban research. The public programme days will take place from 10 to 12 June, 16 to 19 June and 22 to 26 June 2022. The non-public days in between are reserved for the measurements in the houses necessary for the competition. On 24 June, the closing ceremony will take place, at which the overall winning team of the SDE 21/22 will also be chosen.
Each day of the event offers different programme items – designed by the participating teams as well as the numerous participating associations, institutions and societies from research and practice. Visitors are invited to take part in the teams' guided tours of their buildings. These take place continuously during opening hours. There are separate excursion programmes for educational institutions, universities and school classes. In addition, the teams will present their country or region during the Country and Culture Days with interactive games, culinary and musical highlights and exciting exhibitions.
