During the summer study on energy efficiency of the European Council for an Energy Efficient Economy 2022 (eceee Summer Study), did Lotte Nawothnig, Researcher in the Energy Policy Research Unit at the Wuppertal Institute together with Sebastian Albert-Seifried from the Büro Ö-Quadrat, present a poster of the cooperation project Schools4Future. The eceee is considered the most important scientific conference in Europe on the topic of energy saving and is a central place to forge European project partnerships. The Schools4Future project supports students in assessing their schools’ Carbon Footprint and in making their schools climate-neutral. In this way, they can get actively engaged into the project goals and take actions themselves.

The presentation of the poster convinced the jury, which awarded the poster the prize for the Highest Potential for Savings. "Of course, the savings potential results primarily from the commitment of the dedicated students, who perceive climate protection as a joint task," says Lotte Nawothnig. For Oliver Wagner, project coordinator and Co-Head of the Energy Policy Research Unit at the Wuppertal Institute, the award is therefore primarily due to the participating schools. He is confident that the successes will motivate the students to continue the project. "We as the project team hope that the great interest in Schools4Future and the gratifying award will lead to the further spread of making students climate protection experts at their schools," explains Lotte Nawothnig. She is optimistic that the Schools4Future project will raise awareness of climate protection among students throughout Europe and that climate-neutral schools will not only be implemented in Germany.
