Just Transition Platform Conference

Researchers of the Wuppertal Institute discuss about challenges and opportunities of emerging clean energy technologies for coal regions

  • Events 24.10. - 26.10.2022
  • Location Brussels & online

With rising temperatures and intensifying effects of climate change, it is imperative to phase out of the use of fossil fuels in the near future to reach the target to become climate-neutral by 2050. To ensure that no region is left behind in this transition, the EU Commission launched the Initiative for coal regions in transition as well as the Just Transition Platform. Both initiatives actively promote the exchange of best practices and assist regions and stakeholders in using the available support mechanisms provided by the EU targeting coal, peat, oil shale and carbon-intensive regions ('coal+' regions) in achieving a just transition.

Registration is now open for the sixth edition of the Just Transition Platform Conference which will take place in hybrid format in Brussels on 24–26 October 2022. The conference, organised by DG ENER and DG REGIO, will bring together European decision-makers and representatives from coal+ regions as well as carbon-intensive regions to discuss European tools to facilitate just transitions, like the Just Transition Fund. Further topics are energy price spikes, sustainable labour markets and how to make today's economies future-proof.

The Wuppertal Institute is part of the Secretariat of the Initiative for coal regions in transition, which co-organises the platform event. Timon Wehnert, senior researcher at the Wuppertal Institute and head of the Berlin Office, will moderate a session which informs about innovative emerging clean energy solutions that build on specific advantages or pre-existing infrastructure of regions.
