The Combination of Public and Private Climate Finance

Carbon Mechanisms Review "Scaling Climate Action" published

  • News 19.05.2023

The new issue of Carbon Mechanisms Review is all about climate finance and carbon pricing: The authors take a look behind the scenes of the world's largest conference on carbon markets and climate finance, Innovate4Climate, in Bilbao. From 23 to 25 May 2023, experts from science, politics, business, media and the financial sector meet to discuss climate finance, climate investment and international carbon markets.

As a fitting complement, Nicolas Kreibich, Senior Researcher in the Global Climate Governance Research Unit of the Wuppertal Institute, and Gesa Schöneberg, Head of Research & Consulting at the Foundation Development and Climate Alliance, discuss an alternative to buying carbon credits on the voluntary market: The "Contribution Claim" model enables companies to publicly declare their climate protection efforts in a credible way, without claiming purely arithmetical climate neutrality – which is often burdened by greenwashing accusations. In another article, Kreibich and Christof Arens, also senior researcher in the same research unit, discuss how emission reductions achieved in international climate protection projects can be fairly distributed among the involved actors.

In other news, the current issue features articles on Zambia’s road to Article 6 implementation and on challenges in calculating the mitigation effects of clean cooking programs.
