16. International Sustainability Transitions Conference

Four researchers from the Wuppertal Institute present papers and speed talks

This year's International Sustainability Transitions Conference, IST'25 for short, brings together researchers from all over the world for the 16th time on the topic of sustainability transitions in Lisbon, Portugal. The conference is titled "Tensions and Trade-Offs in Structural Changes for Sustainability Transitions" and invites critical debates on the complexities and contradictions of the transition to sustainability. Four researchers at the Wuppertal Institute, Franziska Erbe, Julia Schlarmann, Charlotte Hullmann and Dr.-Ing. Alina Wetzchewald, each from one of the Institute's four Research Divisions, will attend the conference and present results from projects and dissertations as full papers and speed talks:

  • Franziska Erbe, Researcher in the Circular Transitions Research Unit, will give a speed talk on the topic "It's the tensions, stupid! How hybrid business models bridge conflicting tensions and logics in the circular economy transition".
  • Charlotte Hullmann, Researcher and PhD Student in the Transformative Industrial Policy Research Unit, presents her full paper "Navigating the Plastics Industry Towards Low Environmental Impact – A Comparative Policy Analysis of Germany and Italy".
  • Julia Schlarmann, Researcher in the Production and Consumption Systems Research Unit, will give a speed talk titled "Designing formats at the science-policy-society-interface: Challenges and success factors using the example of the DNS-Lab format".
  • Dr.-Ing. Alina Wetzchewald, Researcher in the Mobility and Transport Policy Research Unit, gives a speed talk on "Governing Exnovation in transport planning at a local level while going beyond technological change – the case of the car-free city centre in Oslo".
