Reliable digital data is the indispensable foundation for a sustainable and functioning circular economy. It creates the necessary transparency and thus enables efficient management, repair, and recycling of products.
Despite this fundamental necessity, the transition to sustainability in the global economy is hampered by a central problem: data fragmentation. Although numerous regional initiatives exist, such as the European and Chinese Digital Product Passport (DPP), there is still no internationally agreed concept for efficient and secure data exchange. To prevent these isolated initiatives from becoming incompatible data silos and to ensure the necessary global scaling, it is essential to create an overarching, common global framework.
This is precisely where the current "Blueprint for a Global DPIS Framework" comes in, which was developed in collaboration with 10YFP One Planet Network and the Wuppertal Institute, with the participation of the Life Cycle Initiative. It serves as a strategic guide for the creation of an internationally valid global framework for digital product information systems (DPIS) and, through standardized data exchange, supports the release of the full potential of a sustainable and circular economy. In addition, the blueprint provides the basis for the implementation of political and technical guidelines for decision-makers and developers worldwide, promotes interoperability, inclusivity, and long-term sustainability, and presents a roadmap for global implementation. A particular focus is on the equitable participation of developing countries.
The next crucial step is now the development of the actual Global DPIS framework. The blueprint will be used as a binding guideline for this purpose. The framework is intended to create the basis for an interoperable system for the exchange of product information – from material composition to environmental impact. The participating organizations aim to promote the global implementation of DPIS, thereby creating a globally harmonized and inclusive DPIS ecosystem that actively supports sustainability and the circular economy.
