ReMal Waste Observatory: Data from Six Coastal Zones is now Online

The project "Reducing Marine Litter in the Mediterranean through Waste Wise Cities Lebanon" (ReMaL) takes a strategic approach to reducing marine litter by focusing on waste data generation and policy planning support. By implementing the UN-Habitat Waste Wise Cities Tool (WaCT), the project supports robust data collection and the development of solid waste master plans for key coastal areas in Lebanon, a process that has now reached a major milestone.

Comprehensive, up-to-date waste data from six critical coastal service zones is now officially live on the ReMaL Waste Observatory platform, allowing stakeholders, partners, and the public to easily access interactive SWM facility maps of Lebanon's coastal service zones. This open-access platform integrates deep-dive data on waste composition, collection coverage, and material flows with user-friendly visualisations, infographics, and learning materials. As a growing hub of best practices in sustainable waste management, it provides the essential evidence-based resources needed to drive regional planning forward.

The newly published dataset from Lebanon directly addresses a data consistency and quality gap that is a very common challenge for cities across the Global South. By providing clear baselines for household and commercial waste, these insights are vital to identifying systemic gaps, assessing infrastructure capacity, and unlocking future investments.The ReMaL project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN).
