Within the project "CBE4I – Clean Bioenergy for Industry", the project consortium has developed and tested a novel fuel-flexible biomass gasification technology for highly energy-efficient, close-to-zero-emission process heat supply in industry. The system has been designed to use low-cost biomass residues: In Central Europe, these include in particular residues from forest management; in Southern Europe, for example, prunings from orchards, vineyards and olive trees as well as forest residues from wildfire prevention measures.
The CBE4I system combines an updraft gasifier, a multi-stage gas burner with an integrated three-way catalyst, product gas extraction with tar reforming, flue gas condensation with a directly coupled heat pump, intelligent crane-based fuel logistics and a concept for the treatment and utilisation of ashes in fertiliser production. In a testing plant with 400 kW fuel power at Polytechnik in Weissenbach, Austria, the system achieved very good environmental performance: almost zero emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), dust, hydrogen chloride (HCl) and sulphur oxides (SOx), a 65 to 80 per cent reduction in nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions through the three-way catalyst, and a tar reforming efficiency of 99 per cent in the extracted product gas.
Against this background, the public final project workshop will take place online on 21 October 2026 from 14:00 to 16:30 CEST. Participants will receive an overview of the CBE4I concept, the main technical developments and test-run results, and potential applications in industry.
The workshop is organised by the Wuppertal Institute, in cooperation with Bios Bioenergiesysteme GmbH (project coordinator) and all CBE4I project partners. The project is funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme (Grant Agreement No 101122292, duration: September 2023–November 2026).
The workshop will be held in English. Registration and further information are available via the link below.
