Mobility in North Rhine-Westphalia - Situation and Future Perspectives

  • Project no.250533
  • Duration 06/2015 - 12/2015

The Rosa Luxemburg Foundation commissioned a study on "Mobility in North Rhine-Westphalia - Situation and Future Perspectives" that aimed to analyse the current situation of mobility and transport in North Rhine-Westphalia and to develop social and political options for action.

As a first step, Wuppertal Institute identified relevant fields of action for a socially, ecologically and economically sustainable mobility, based on literature analysis. These fields included urban structures, road and rail infrastructure, public transport services including car and bike sharing, efficient and low-emission vehicles and organisation and information on mobility.

The status quo of mobility in North Rhine-Westphalia was analysed along these thematic fields. Based on the analysis, Wuppertal Institute developed a mobility concept comprising a mission statement of future mobility, specific targets and options for action. The concept differentiated potential measures according to their spacial level and the time horizon of their implementation and discussed policy instruments. Stakeholders, civil society representatives and further experts were integrated in the development of the mobility concept in the context of an expert workshop.
