Sustainable All Around - Synergies and Trade-Offs between Climate Protection and other Sustainable Development Goals

  • Project no.251740
  • Duration 11/2018 - 12/2018

In 2015, the United Nations adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the same year, the Paris Agreement (PA) marked a breakthrough for the UN climate negotiations. While SDGs and PA are not connected legally, there are significant interactions both at the level of goals and with regard to implementation. These interactions can have negative as well as positive consequences. This study focuses primarily on the issue of trade-offs, which is so far receiving little public discussion, and aims to present initial ideas on how to resolve them.

The project is being conducted as a desktop study based on existing literature. The analysis focuses on the  electricity generation and transport sectors. The research consists of three steps:

  • develop an overview of potential trade-offs
  • assess to what extent the trade-offs that have been identified can be clustered and structured within sectors
  • discuss policy options, making reference to existing literature on integrated policy approaches that minimise trade-offs from the start
