The Contribution of Synthetic Fuels to Transform Transport: Options and Priorities

  • Project no.251839
  • Duration 02/2019 - 03/2019

This brief study discusses the fields in which the application of synthetic fuels appears to be appropriate. It describes the possible applications, points out alternative mitigation options and provides an overview of the economic effects of synthetic fuels. On this basis, conclusions for their contribution to the transformation of transport and mobility are derived and translated into priorities for policy makers.

Synthetic fuels are another option in the portfolio of climate protection strategies; they can contribute to the complete decarbonisation of the German and international transport sector if measures to avoid transport, to shift towards alternative modes and to improve vehicle/system efficiency will be implemented consistently.

However, there may potentially be high demand for synthetic fuels, and there are concerns about their sustainable availability. Moreover, due to the limited efficiency in the production process, synthetic fuels will only be an expensive option. Their main application should therefore be in the international aviation and shipping sectors. In these segments, there is a lack of other options to decarbonise transport and mobility.
