Green Feedstock for a Sustainable Chemistry – Energy Transition and Resource Efficiency in the Context of the Third Feedstock Transformation in the Chemical Industry

In the course of the energy transition, the petrochemical industry, which is responsible for almost 20 per cent of the demand for petroleum products in Germany, is facing a "third feedstock transformation". This refers to a transition from today's fossil-dominated industry to a circular and climate-neutral system based on renewable raw materials. The GreenFeed project, led by the Wuppertal Institute, explores possible pathways towards such a system in collaboration with the research partners Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the DBFZ (Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum). The methods of scenario analysis and technology assessment will be used to show how carbon recycling and a change in the raw material base can make a significant contribution to a primary energy-efficient and climate-neutral economy.

The two core objectives are on the one hand  to preserve the value of petrochemical products as long as possible in material terms and thus avoid significant waste volumes and greenhouse gas emissions, and on the other hand to establish GHG-neutral value chains in the chemical industry in order to make them robust  in Germany and Europe in the long term. In addition to topic-specific workshops, a small group of relevant practice partners from the petrochemical industry, waste management, bioeconomy and regional networks of the chemical industry is also supporting the research project in the form of an industry advisory board.
