A Digital Green Twin

  • Project no.352586
  • Duration 05/2022 - 04/2025

A total of seven new "it's OWL" projects with a total volume of 13.8 million euros started in spring 2022. These projects are about new forms of artificial intelligence (AI), a digital green twin, working with Small Data, and automated detection of greenhouse gas polluters in companies.

The Wuppertal Institute is represented in the it's-OWL project "EcoTwin", which researches the development and transformation towards ecological sustainability with the help of digital green twins. Together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechatronics Design IEM and Kannegiesser, the Wuppertal Institute is investigating how a digital green twin can help companies become more resource-efficient and ecologically sustainable. This twin collects, processes and networks specific information from different applications, for example. Within the EcoTwin project, the researchers are focusing on mechanical and plant engineering. In particular, the networking of development, production and operating data through digital green twins has the potential to improve the resource efficiency and ecological sustainability of products and their production processes.
In this context, the Wuppertal Institute primarily analyses the key drivers for ecological sustainability in mechanical and plant engineering. The researchers then plan, design, develop and implement digital green twins together with the project partners.
