Hamburg's Potential for Circular Economy in a Green Economy

  • Project no. 352803
  • Duration 03/2022 - 08/2022

The project "Hamburg's Potential for Circular Economy in a Green Economy" aims to promote Hamburg's transformation from a linear to a circular economy. In view of the global challenges posed by the unchecked consumption of raw materials and the resulting negative ecological and socio-economic effects, the transition to a circular economy is of crucial importance for sustainable development. With a focus on sustainable resource utilisation and the reduction of CO2 emissions, the project aims to establish Hamburg as a circular economy pioneer and to promote innovative approaches that are both ecologically and economically beneficial.

Conducted by the Wuppertal Institute in cooperation with the Hamburg Institute for Innovation, Climate Protection and Circular Economy (HiiCCE), the project analyses the current status of the circular economy in Hamburg, identifies potentials and develops concrete measures for implementation. The specific project objectives are:

  • Status analysis: analysing the current state of the circular economy in Hamburg, existing projects and the economic structure in terms of their potential
  • Best practice comparison: presentation of international successes in the circular economy and their transferability to Hamburg
  • Actor and structural analysis: identification of relevant actors, networks and funding opportunities in Hamburg
  • Regulatory framework conditions: overview of future legal requirements and support options for Hamburg companies
  • Recommendations for action: development of a roadmap and specific proposals for promoting the circular economy in Hamburg, including potential lighthouse projects
