Climate-Neutral Industry in 2045 – Target Vision, Key Requirements and Social Implications

  • Project no.153418
  • Duration 04/2024 - 10/2024

A successful transformation of Germany's industrial sector towards climate neutrality in 2045 is of crucial importance both for achieving Germany's greenhouse gas emission reduction targets as well as for maintaining well-paid jobs and economic value creation in Germany. At the same time, industrial production facilities and the construction and operation of the necessary infrastructure can have negative impacts on nature. In view of the various potential effects of industrial transformation on nature and the environment, the environmental NGO NABU Germany commissioned the Wuppertal Institute to carry out a study that shows what a climate-neutral industry in Germany could look like according to the current standard of knowledge.

Based on the currently available scientific literature, the study will show which new technologies are likely to be used in a climate-neutral industry – and which infrastructural, regulatory and social conditions need to be in place for this transformation to succeed. The study will also outline the expected societal implications of a successful industrial transformation, for example in terms of employment and resilience.
