The "Sustainable Development Initiative on the Implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement under the UNFCCC process" (SDI) project aims to promote sustainable development (SD) within the framework of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and to align climate action with the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The project operationalises the SD requirements outlined in the "Glasgow Rulebook" for market mechanisms and cooperative approaches, addressing the currently insufficient consideration of SDG impacts in carbon markets and climate projects.
The Objective of the project is to develop methodologies for assessing positive SDG impacts, to simplify their measurement and reporting, and to strengthen the integration of sustainability aspects into climate policy and market mechanisms, while also aiming to prevent negative impacts.
Approach and Methodology of the project are structured around three pillars:
Workstreams:
Expected outcomes: The project will aid the quantification of SDG contributions from climate action projects and serve as a model for the implementation of Article 6. It aims to bridge voluntary and compliance carbon markets, fostering transformative approaches to climate action and sustainable development.
Contribution of the Wuppertal Institute: The Institute contributes its expertise in transdisciplinary research and the analysis of global climate negotiations. It supports tool development and ensures the integration of the SDGs with objectives of the Paris Agreement at local, national, and international levels.
