ContClaim-NGI

Piloting the Null Grad Invest Fund as a Financing Option for the Contribution Claim Model

  • Project no. 253642
  • Duration 03/2025 - 02/2026

More and more companies are setting their own climate protection targets in order to fulfil their social responsibility in the climate crisis. In addition to their internal decarbonisation, the financing of climate change mitigation projects outside their value chains is becoming increasingly important in this context. Until now, many organisations have relied on carbon offsetting through carbon credits from the voluntary carbon market. However, this model has been criticised due to the poor quality of credits, greenwashing abuse and misleading carbon neutrality claims.

The Contribution Claim Model provides an alternative approach in which the emission reductions achieved outside the companies' value chains are not used to offset their emissions. Instead, it combines internal and external climate action in an innovative way, promotes ambitious mitigation activities and helps to close the financing gap in the sustainability transformation.

In the project "ContClaim-NGI – Piloting the Null Grad Invest Fund as a Financing Option for the Contribution Claim Model", this approach is now implemented in collaboration with "Brot für die Welt" (English: Bread for the World). The aim is to establish Bread for the World’s "Null Grad Invest" (NGI) fund as a concrete financing option for the Contribution Claim Model. The project builds on the Development and Climate Alliance Foundation's guide, which was developed by the Wuppertal Institute on behalf of the foundation in collaboration with key stakeholders from politics, business and civil society.

The first step will be to evaluate and adapt the NGI fund based on the guide. A pilot phase is then planned with companies applying the guide and providing targeted financing for mitigation activities outside their value chains via the NGI fund.

The project aims to promote the effective mobilisation of private funds for climate change mitigation and to strengthen climate funds such as the NGI fund as effective financing instruments within the framework of the Contribution Claim Model.
