The North Rhine-Westphalia state initiative "Interdisciplinary and inter-institutional development of a one-year ESD project course for upper secondary pupils: 'Research and Engaging in Sustainability'" aims to promote quality development and professionalisation in the field of ESD project learning and to establish cross-institutional ESD networking. The focus lies primarily on cooperation between schools, universities, centres for practical teacher training, and extracurricular learning locations. To this end, the project team develops an interdisciplinary and inter-institutional project course for upper secondary schools that will enable participants to effectively study sustainability topics in an experimental setting, using design-based methods and collaborating with extracurricular actors, with a particular focus on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Wuppertal Institute is responsible for the scientific evaluation. This includes measuring the project's effects using co-creatively developed indicators and providing scientific process support. This approach allows quality assurance to be implemented already during the project period and, if necessary, the course curriculum to be iteratively adjusted and redesigned in several phases. As a result, quality standards for ESD project work are to be identified.
