Tanzania Gateway for Transport, Trade and Environment (T-Gate) is a four-year Global Gateway project funded by the European Union (2025-2028). The project aims to improve transport systems on selected strategic corridors, making them more efficient, environmentally friendly and safer, while also improving the physical circulation of goods and people. Tanzania’s key trade and transport stakeholders are supported to enhance and develop sustainable services within the port of Dar es Salaam, the city itself, and its hinterland corridors. The project is part of the EU’s "Trade and Transport Facilitation Measures for Strategic Corridors in Africa" programme. It is structured around three pillars: port performance (pillar 1), trade facilitation (pillar 2), and green mobility/e-mobility (pillar 3).
Under pillar 3 of green mobility/e-mobility, activities aim to transition Dar es Salaam towards a low-carbon transport system by supporting the sustainable movement of both goods and people, particularly through the promotion of electric mobility. This pillar is jointly implemented by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Enabel, the Wuppertal Institute and UN Environment (UNEP).
The Wuppertal Institute is responsible for building capacities and supporting peer learning on electric and sustainable urban mobility, in order to train and upskill the current and future workforce. The Institute will also contribute to activities that strengthen institutional actors, develop a conducive regulatory framework, and support new entrepreneurs in the field of e-mobility.
