TransFin-GLS

Research Cooperation Finance for Sustainability GLS Bank & Wuppertal Institute

  • Project no. 452917
  • Duration 06/2022 - 03/2026

With the TransFin-GLS project, the research cooperation between GLS Bank and the Wuppertal Institute is consolidated through a framework agreement. The aim of the collaboration is to provide scientific support for the socio-ecological transformation of the financial sector and to identify practical levers for financing the transformation.

The focus lies on the development and application of methods to assess the sustainability impacts of GLS Bank’s lending and investment portfolios.

The partnership includes individual projects focused on developing methodologies to evaluate climate protection potentials and biodiversity risks within credit portfolios, as well as the development of policy instruments, such as "Transformation Money" (German: Transformationsgeld) for households.

The sub-projects under the framework agreement include:

  1. Development of a "Financial Carbon Footprint Calculator"
  2. Methodological development for biodiversity risk assessment
  3. Short study on "Transformation Money"

The collaboration ensures a continuous exchange of knowledge between applied research and banking practice. It contributes directly to the Wuppertal Institute’s research framework in the field of "Business and Finance for Sustainability."
