Germany has set itself the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2045. This requires a far-reaching transformation of all sectors. While the changes required to achieve this in Germany have already been extensively examined in the form of numerous climate protection scenarios, the potential consequences of these changes for the countries of the Global South have not yet been examined in detail. Against this backdrop, the ProEvolution Foundation has commissioned the Wuppertal Institute to systematically examine how the implementation of key German climate protection strategies can generate positive momentum for transformation and foster new forms of international cooperation beyond traditional development aid.

At the core of the project is the development of an analytical assessment framework to holistically evaluate the economic, environmental, social, and geopolitical impacts of various climate protection strategies. The strategies under consideration include, for example, the expansion of renewable energy, progress towards a circular economy, and the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy. By identifying win-win scenarios, the project team aims to highlight ways in which Germany can meet its own demand for climate-neutral energy sources while simultaneously promoting technological and economic development opportunities in partner countries.

This exploratory research project aims to support a forward-looking climate policy that combines environmental ambition with international partnerships on an equal footing. The aim is for the findings to provide decision-makers in politics and business with concrete approaches for shaping the transition in a way that is globally equitable and synergistic.
