Research Assistance Bicycle Sharing Systems

Public Bicycle Sharing Systems - Innovative Urban Mobility "Research Assistance"

  • Project no.1254
  • Duration 10/2009 - 12/2011

The Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development funds eight model projects to establish innovative public bicycle sharing systems, which are going to be evaluated in the course of the programme "ExWoSt".

The coordination, preparation and quality assurance of the evaluation is conducted by the Wuppertal Institute in cooperation with the German Institute of Urban Affairs (Difu) in the framework of the Research Assistance. The project has been commissioned by the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR). The project's intention is to determine effects and processes of the bicycle sharing systems in order to draw conclusions about factors for success or failure.

The concept of evaluation was developed by the Wuppertal Institut. Based on this concept, the process evaluation is carried out by local evaluators, while the impact evaluation is conducted in a centralised manner. Finally the Wuppertal Institute will compare the findings of the particular project evaluations.

The Research Assistance also organises workshops and conducts a monitoring of the research field bicycle sharing.
