Climate Relevance of Waste Management in the City of Düsseldorf. Part 2: Taking Acount of the Production

  • Project no.1326
  • Duration 01/2013 - 08/2013

Based on a previous study of the Wuppertal Institute, which showed the significance of the waste treatment type of domestic waste for the climate relevance of waste management, this project discusses the climate relevance of the production of products and substances to be found in domestic waste. On the basis of the sorting results of a domestic waste analysis the greenhouse gas emissions will be calculated for products and substances found in the domestic waste of the city of Düsseldorf. The quantitative assessment allows evaluate the relevance of different life stages and therefore, offers the opportunity to know whether a strategy of waste avoidance would lead to larger or smaller saving potentials of greenhouse gas emissions, than optimizing the recycling or waste disposal process. A related question would be whether strategies of waste avoidance or recycling, can have a larger impact.
