Towards a Single and Innovative European Transport System: International Assessment and Action Plans of the Focus Areas

  • Project no.250865
  • Duration 04/2016 - 04/2017

The study "Towards a single and innovative European transport system" takes into account the European Commission's White Paper on Transport and aims at identifying barriers within Europe and at finding best practices in the international arena that can be potentially translated to the European context in order to overcome these barriers. Based on this two-fold approach, action plans and roadmaps shall be derived that help establish an integrated transport system in Europe. The countries in focus - Brazil, China, India, Japan, South Korea and the United States of America - have been analysed within five thematic transport research areas in accordance with the Strategic Transport Research and Innovation Agenda (STRIA):

(1) connected driving and automation of transport, use of automated optimisation of traffic flows,
(2) transformation of infrastructure to address connectivity, resilience, new fuels and energy efficiency,
(3) smart mobility services (including provision and use of data as well as urban mobility), freight and logistics,
(4) standardisation and interoperability, and
(5) alternative fuels other than electrification.
