The overlapping of the energy transition by megatrends such as digitalisation or demographic change requires more than ever integrated problem-solving concepts for the implementation of the energy transition. In addition to the technical aspects, those concepts need to focus on the socio-economic characteristics of the individual regions and municipalities, while taking possible changes caused by the megatrends into account.
In this subproject, a strategy for the establishment of a hydrogen model region is being developed in cooperation with the Ministry for Economy, Innovation, Digitization and Energy of the State NRW, using the existing chemical cluster in the Emscher-Lippe region as an example. The aim is to create a future perspective for an industry in global competition in the course of the energy transition and thus to achieve an economic strengthening of the region. The instruments of research are technical and institutional analyses of the current situation. On this basis, sustainable development directions are to be developed together with the actors.
The project is funded by the Mercator Foundation.
