CO2 Capture and Storage (CCS): Potentials and Limits, Chances and Risks for the Gas Industry

  • Project no.1104
  • Duration 04/2004 - 07/2005

The subject matter of this research assignment was to compile a study on the issue of "CO2 Capture and Storage (CCS): potentials and limits, chances and risks for the gas industry". The aim of this project was to analyze the future status of CO2-sequestration as a strategic instrument for climate protection from the view of the energy industry.

The availability (and security) of storage potentials had to be analyzed as well as the infrastructural conditions for their use. With regard to the gas industry Research Group I analyzed convergence points along the process chain and asked how the know-how of this industry branch could be profitably used. In the long run, of great significance for the energy industry will be the question if CO2 capture and storage can be done directly at the primary energy source natural gas in order to supply the consumer (e.g. power stations and traffic) directly or indirectly with hydrogen.
