CO2 Sequestration and Utilization: Assessment of Chances and Risks from the Point of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW)

  • Project no.2115
  • Duration 12/2004 - 12/2005

Subject of the research assignment is the assessment of chances and risks of CO2-capture and storage (CCS) for North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). Main task of the study is to show present and future possibilities of CCS-technologies, and to identify and discuss the resulting economic and industrial chances for the federal state NRW.
Current research already shows that further specified analyses are necessary to get a deeper understanding of the capacity of the different CO2 storage options and the related quality of the storage systems with long term stability. Especially the geographical distribution of possible storage fields in relation to existing CO2 sources has to be assessed if CCS should be realised in practice.
These issues have important influence on the realisation of a possible CCS infrastructure and on the overall energy economic potential of this climate protection technology. Especially for NRW as an important energy technology country the related industrial potential of CCS is relevant to analyse.
