The Research Unit Mobility and International Cooperation develops implementation-oriented concepts that bring local demand, technical expertise, and policy advice together with financing institutions.
It is embedded in European and international partnerships such as the CiViTAS Initiative, the Urban Electric Mobility Initiative and the urban mobility SOLUTIONS network, in which it plays an active role in supporting the take-up of sustainable urban mobility solutions. The Research Unit also cooperates closely with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) on developing implementation concepts and action plans to deliver on the New Urban Agenda. In close cooperation with a network of over 100 international project partners, the Research Unit aims to close the implementation gap between applied research and policy action to foster sustainable urban development and mobility in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America.
The Research Unit will help deliver on the Paris Agreement and the NDCs in the context of the New Urban Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, building on an international partnership to support national and local governments in developing action plans and concrete implementation measures to boost low-carbon urban development and mobility. This work includes assessing political, technological, socio-economic and financial viability.
The main thematic focus of the Research Unit is on low-carbon mobility pathways, particularly in urban areas. A major aspect of the Research Unit's work is the assessment of policy and governance processes and institutions in Europe and developing and emerging economies. Cities currently account for about 70 per cent of energy consumption and energy related greenhouse gas emissions. Urban mobility makes up a large part of this, particularly in developing and emerging economies. The integration of urban energy and transport sectors is a core element in the realisation of global climate change mitigation and sustainable development efforts. This is a vital objective of the New Urban Agenda and the Research Unit aims to help bring climate action and urban mobility objectives together by developing policy advice for urban and national governments.
The Research Unit is currently working on projects in Europe and in developing and emerging economies, including:
