With a global trend towards decarbonisation, the Islamic Republic of Iran with its unique oil and gas resources has a growing interest in a transformation of its energy system. A knowledge exchange between leading Iranian energy research institutes and the Wuppertal Institute has already kicked off in May 2017: An Iranian delegation of researchers and stakeholders visited the Wuppertal Institute to get an overview of the institute's research activities and projects.

From 10 to 11 October 2017, Wuppertal Institute's Prof. Dr. Stefan Lechtenböhmer, Dr. Stefan Thomas and Dr. Thomas Fink (all Research Group Future Energy and Mobility Structures) now travelled to the city of Tehran, Iran, to run a number of workshops together with the Sharif University (Sharif Energy Research Institute) and the Tehran University (Institute for Petroleum Engineering). This round of workshops builds on the earlier exchange and focuses on topics that are of peculiar interest to the Iran and its research institutions, e. g. the energy intensive industry. The workshops guided by the theme "Transformation of the Iranian Energy System towards Sustainability" were used as starting point to identify possible joint research activities.

This knowledge exchange is supported by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) as just one measure to promote cooperations between German and Iranian research institutes.
