Seven Key Strategies for Sustainable Policy-Making

Resource efficiency report out now

  • News 19.01.2018

The International Resource Panel has published a new report, titled "Assessing Global Resource Use: A Systems Approach to Resource Efficiency and Pollution Reduction". The report brings concepts of decoupling and resource efficiency to the attention of global policy leaders. It argues that more efficient use of natural resources across the life-cycle can be one of the most cost-efficient and effective ways to reduce impacts on the environment, including pollution. A change in the use of natural resources will also achieve the socio-economic objectives of international sustainable development and climate goals. Dr. Meghan O'Brien of the Research Unit Circular Economy, Wuppertal Institute, was a lead author and editor. In particular, she helped develop seven key strategies for multi-beneficial policy-making.
The report has been welcomed by the UN Environment Assembly in their Resolution on Environment and Health, recognising the critical role resource efficiency plays towards emission abatement and encouraging further assessments on options for enhancing sustainable management of natural resources by the Resource Panel.
