From 2 to 13 December the next round of international climate negotiations is taking place in Madrid. One key issue of the negotiations will be how to implement the new cooperative mechanisms under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The German Environment Agency now published two discussion papers on this topic prepared by the Wuppertal Institute in cooperation with INFRAS and Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI.

Article 6 of the Paris Agreement enables countries to cooperate in the implementation of their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and transfer emission reductions among themselves. The two papers "Incentives for Private Sector Participation in the Article 6.4 Mechanism" und "Options for fostering a net-zero GHG emission world under the Paris Article 6.4 Mechanism" now published address the following questions:

  • How can private companies be incentivised to participate in the Article 6.4 Mechanism?
  • How can the Article 6.4 Mechanism be used to support the development towards a world where greenhouse gas emissions are (net) zero?

The two papers were produced as part of the project "Article 6 Design Options". Another four discussion papers from the project were published earlier this year. The discussion papers and further information can be found under the following links.
