Tactical Urbanism: What, Why and How?

Webinar series (Part 1): Fundamentals of Tactical Urbanism

  • Events 18.02.2020

Cities like Copenhagen, Amsterdam and New York were not always as attractive as they are today. They have undergone constant change. New York is the most recent example of the countries mentioned above: New York changed from traffic-jammed streets with yellow taxis to streets inviting to sit and play outside.

For the transformation of public spaces the communication between city administrations and users is crucial. However, this is often neglected, leading to unused or dead public spaces in cities. Tactical urbanism offers itself as a tool to revitalise such spaces and to transform them into people-friendly spaces at minimal cost and in a limited time – through a community-driven approach, while at the same time creating an awareness of the need for space.

The first part of the webinar series focuses primarily on the fundamentals of tactical urbanism and process. It will also present some examples and current experiences of implementing tactical urbanism in India. The topics and speakers are:

  • The creation of livable cities and tactical urbanism: an integrative approach
Prerna Mehta, Head - Urban Development, World Resources Institute India
  • Short-term measures for long-term change - Tactical urbanism on the Big Bazaar Street of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India
Ranjith Parvathapuram, urban transport expert, Coimbatore, GIZ SMART SUT Project GFA

This webinar series is funded by the Wuppertal Institute as part of the "environMENTALISE" initiative of the Urban Pathways Project by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the Federal Ministry for the Environment. The one-hour webinar is organised jointly with the World Resources Institute India and will take place on 18 February 2020 at 09:30 a.m. (Central European Time).
