More Transparency for "Climate Neutrality" and Other Claims

New policy paper published in Carbon Mechanisms Review

"Climate-neutral product", "100% carbon neutral" or even "climate-positive": more and more companies are using these (green) claims in advertising. These claims give the impression that individual products or even the entire company have no or even positive effects on the global climate. In order for consumers not to be misled by deceptive claims, clear rules are needed. But how do the respective countries actually handle this?

Against this background, the policy paper No. 3 "Governing Corporate Claims" provides an overview of how climate-related claims are regulated in selected jurisdictions and analyses the current status of two voluntary carbon market initiatives that are working towards an internationally agreed use of such claims. Based on these findings, Nicolas Kreibich, Victoria Brandemann und Franziska Jüde from the Research Unit Global Climate Governance discuss what the emerging regulation and governance could mean for the voluntary carbon market.
