Scientific Advice on Environmental Impact of the WiRD Project

  • Project no.350628
  • Duration 08/2015 - 12/2016

Re-use and especially preparation for re-use, e.g. through repair and up-cycling of products, have been shifting increasingly into the focus of policy initiatives. On the European level, the Roadmap to a resource efficient Europe and the EU Circular Economy Action Plan indicate the potentials for resource savings and job creation through better structures in this sector. This project develops structures for a manageable and realisable concept to record re-used amounts and related environmental benefits. It refers to experiences of other Member States like Belgium or Austria, where regional networks with uniform quality and reporting standards increased the amount of re-used products.

In Germany, the project has the aim to connect the numerous initiatives and therefore contribute to the development of these uniform standards. Against this background, the working package of scientific monitoring will ecologically evaluate the different measures of preparation for re-use. In order to do so, ecological and quantitative balance models that already have been used at home and abroad are analysed with regard to their transferability to the umbrella brand strategy and licensing model that will be developed. Based on this, a concept for such an evaluation model to enable regular self-checking of the institutions represented by the umbrella organisation.
