Shaping Urban Mobility Turns – or: How Can We Successfully Organise Transitions to Sustainable Passenger Mobility in Cities that are Willing to Change?

  • Project no.251572
  • Duration 04/2018 - 03/2020

The research project is part of a publication-based doctoral thesis at the University of Wuppertal. It is funded by the ADAC Stiftung. The aim of the research project is to analyse how successful pioneer cities have managed their transitions from a car-oriented to a sustainable transport agenda with ambitious modal shift approaches. What lessons can cities learn that would also like to change but are still at the beginning of their transition path?

The central research question is: How can the initial change from a car-oriented to a sustainable urban transport strategy be organised and managed? The project evaluates documents and scientific studies about pioneer cities and change processes to identify criteria for a successful change in local transport policy making. Expert interviews are conducted in both pioneer and beginner cities. The research subject are German cities above 100,000 inhabitants.
